Knowing you’re not alone resonates with you

They head up on the first lift of the morning, into the silence of an empty ski area, before you even click into your skis. They come down last, checking the slopes in the dark. Once they reach the bottom, they give the snowcats the clear to start working.

Thirty volunteers from Croce Bianca Paganella, backpacks on and skis on their feet, working alongside the Carabinieri and Police. These are people who choose to spend their weekends and holidays up on the mountain, ready to move.

Based at Cima Paganella, they run through first aid drills and techniques between calls.

Then, the radio sounds. It usually happens right before lunch or in the late afternoon, when fatigue betrays the legs. Sometimes it’s a minor injury, and a snowmobile ride down to the valley is enough. For ski edge cuts, though, it takes a tourniquet. A quick metallic clamp, a sharp motion to stop the bleeding right there on the snow. The toboggans are staged near the lift stations, so not a single minute is wasted.

For an emergency, they rush. For bad weather, they wait. When heavy fog and snow roll in, you might call it a day and retreat to the spa. They stay put at the summit. Holding the line until the very last run is cleared.
